TAMPA — Hillsborough coach Earl Garcia pulled no punches when asked about his quarterback, Dwayne Lawson.

“He’s the best I’ve had in the 21 years I’ve been the head coach at Hillsborough High School,” Garcia said of the junior dual-threat quarterback, who accounted for 512 total yards and six touchdowns as Hillsborough (5-2, 5-2) defeated Blake 52-21 on Friday night.

Lawson threw for 405 yards and five touchdowns, and ran for 107 yards and a touchdown. Xavier Byrd caught three of Lawson’s touchdown passes, finishing with five receptions for 273 yards. Kenny Gunn added 107 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Lawson started the scoring with a 69-yard run on Hillsborough’s second play from scrimmage. An 87-yard pass from Lawson to Byrd put the Terriers up 15-0 before Kristain Robinson and Blake answered.

Robinson hit Ricardo Brown on a 48-yard strike and Justin Jackson from 6 yards out to cut the deficit to 15-14.

Lawson then hit Byrd on a 65-yard strike just before halftime, and Hillsborough pulled away.

Robinson ran for a touchdown, and Corey Bennett ran for 105 yards on 20 carries for Blake (2-6, 2-4).
