SEFFNER — Cruz Mendez converted a 2-point run in double overtime as International Community School spoiled Seffner Christian’s homecoming, handing Crusaders their first loss of the season.

Neither team scored in the first overtime but the Crusaders’ Caleb Newman (10 carries for 97 yards) took a run off right tackle and in for the score on the first play of the second extra frame. Dalton Kocsis hit the extra point to put Seffner Christian (5-1) up 19-12.

But on third down Matt Sharpe connected with John Ryan Alligood on a 5-yard score to trim the lead to one. ICS (5-1) elected to go for two and Mendez just clipped the front right pylon for the win.

Robbie Shell (16 rushes for 211 yards) scored the TDs for Seffner Christian on runs of 66 and 23 yards, both in the second quarter. But Seffner Christian’s seventh fumble of the night — and the third lost — proved crucial. ICS took over with 3:17 to play and marched 85 yards on eight plays, capped off by Sharpe’s 1-yard TD with 1:08 left.

The Crusaders had a chance to win in regulation, reaching the Comets’ 13-yard line with five seconds remaining. But Kocsis’ 30-yard attempt came up just short.
