Central fumbled the opening kickoff against Lake Weir, which was just the beginning of a mistake-filled night for the Bears in a 39-19 loss at home Friday.
“We had too many turnovers and gave them a short field too many times,” Central coach Mike Einspahr said. “We just couldn’t recover from all those mistakes.”
The Bears (1-3) went into halftime trailing only 14-7 after Jeremy Williams picked off a Lake Weir pass and ran 90 yards for a touchdown right before the break.
But a fumble on a bubble screen pass deep in Bears territory to start the second half was scooped up by Lake Weir (2-2) and returned for a touchdown to kill any momentum Central gained before halftime.
In the second half, Central quarterback Josh Burkhardt scored two touchdowns on short quarterback sneaks. Both touchdowns were set up by long passes.
Otherwise, the Central offense struggled to move the ball against a stout Lake Weir defense.
“Offensively, we just couldn’t get anything rolling,” Einspahr said.
