NEW PORT RICHEY — As the final whistle sounded, it was nothing but triumph for the Royal Knights — 18 long years since they last defeated Land O’Lakes. It came down to one drive, one on which it seemed as if Gators quarterback James Pensyl would lead the tying drive in the final minutes. As it seemed as if the Gators had tied the score on fourth down, the officials ruled the receiver went out of bounds before catching the pass, negating the tying touchdown. On the next play, the ball sailed over the receiver, and River Ridge sideline erupted into cheers.
Drive of the game: The Royal Knights capitalized on a backward pass midway through the third quarter that resulted in Patrick Mathieson’s quarterback sneak to push the lead to double digits.
Play of the game: Gators receiver Ethan Weilant seemed to have scored the tying touchdown in the waning seconds. But the call was overturned because Weilant went out of bounds then was the first player to touch the ball.
Star of the game: Though he was bottled up for much of the second half, the Royal Knights’ Chris Schwarz finished with 220 yards on 31 carries.
