ST. PETERSBURG — Both Sarasota Cardinal Mooney and St. Petersburg Catholic scored two touchdowns. But extra points and squandered field position proved to be the difference as the Barons fell short.

“We kept shooting ourselves in the foot,” Barons coach Steve Dudley said.

St. Petersburg Catholic (3-3) went into halftime leading 12-7. Jaquan Fuller ran for touchdowns of 8 and 10 yards. The kick after the first score failed, and the two-point conversion pass after the second was incomplete.

Cardinal Mooney took back the lead on the opening drive of the third quarter, Reese Vita connecting with Austin Leach on a 19-yard pass. On the Barons’ next possession, an eight-play drive ended with a short punt.

St. Petersburg Catholic got the ball back on downs and took over at the Cardinal Mooney 45. But on the first play, scrambling quarterback Jack Sheehan lost a fumble.

The Barons got the ball once more, at their 23 with about 1:30 left.

Again, they made it to Cougars territory — this time the 45 — but a last-ditch pass by Sheehan was intercepted.

St. Petersburg Catholic, having lost two in a row, must now regroup as it hosts Shorecrest for next week’s Class 3A District 5 game.

“It’s a matter of practicing with intensity,” Dudley said.

“They don’t want to feel this again.”
