BRANDON — Seffner Christian rolled to a 57-7 season opening win over Cornerstone Charter at Brandon High’s E.L. McLane Stadium thanks to five touchdown passes from sophomore quarterback Caleb Newman. Newman also ran for two touchdowns.

The Crusaders (1-0) built a 37-7 halftime advantage and added to their lead in the second half with Newman scoring on a 12-yard touchdown run and tossing a 18-yard TD pass to Karmi Mackey.

In the middle of the fourth quarter, Christian Becker recovered a fumble to set up Sarel  Vorster’s 30-yard touchdown run minutes later.

Running back Marcus Richardson added two touchdowns and newcomer Nahshon Benoit also scored for the Crusaders.

Defensively, the Crusaders forced a number of fumbles and got big plays from standout Michael Browning, whose sack helped set up a touchdown in the third quarter.
