BROOKSVILLE — South Sumter overwhelmed Nature Coast 51-20 Friday night behind a strong rushing attack.

Anderson Faulk led the Raiders (8-0, 5-0) with 130 yards on 16 carries and scored three touchdowns.

Early in the second quarter with South Sumter up 14-0, the Sharks’ fast sophomore running back, DeShawn Smith (eight carries, 110 yards), burst past the Raiders’ defense for a 46-yard touchdown. But the Raiders blocked the extra point, leaving the score at 14-6.

The Raiders answered with a 65-yard drive that was finished off by a PJ Brown 1-yard plunge for a 21-6 lead.

Nature Coast (2-5, 2-3) cut into the lead again when quarterback Ryan Quigley took a sneak for a 40-yard TD gallop. But the extra point was blocked again.

The Sharks never got closer than that, as the Raiders (ninth-ranked in Class 5A) pulled away. Smith added a touchdown dash of 46 yards in the fourth.

The Raiders have beaten district opponents by an average of 34 points.

“I’m proud of the offense,” NCT coach Charles Liggett said. “If our defense would’ve helped our offense it could have given us better momentum. The offense is getting stronger, and the defense is getting weaker, and I’m just not getting it done.”
