SEMINOLE — It was almost like St. Petersburg had a spy in the Seminole huddle, the Green Devils’ defense was so intuitive and disruptive.

At one point of Friday’s 35-7 rout, the Warhawks (1-6) simply lined up to run a play and the Green Devil defensive coaches started yelling, “Sweep! Sweep!” Sure enough, Ra’Quanne Dickens got the call around right end and ran right into the back of fullback Austin Lamoureux and St. Petersburg corner stuffer DeMarkus Glover for a 5-yard loss.

“Every week we watch a lot of film,” said senior linebacker Riley Barr, one of a host of players with eight solo tackles, two for losses. “As soon as they line up, we know where the ball’s going. Everyone plays assignment football, and we’re safe and sound.”

After-school discipline kept him on the bench for the first quarter, Deangelo Reeves erupted for 102 yards and two touchdowns on just seven second-quarter carries to break the game open.

“That made me want to do more for my team, score, score, score,” the speedy senior said of his 12-minute break.

“Last year, I ran track to get my speed up and it shows on the (football) field. You have to put the work in, that’s what it all comes down to.”

Reeves paced a 383-yard offense for St. Petersburg (5-1) with 207 total yards and three touchdowns.
