DURANT — Friday night’s Class 7A, District 8 tilt between Durant and Strawberry Crest was a defensive battle, with the Chargers eking out the 11-10 victory.

The Cougars’ Gabe Brown incepted two passes in the first half, but Durant only mustered a 20-yard field goal from Derek Wells. Josh Ingram intercepted Trey VanDeGrift for a 40-yard touchdown and the two-point conversion was good to put the Chargers (5-2, 2-0) up 8-3 at halftime.

To start the second half, John Hendricks burst up the middle 75 yards as Durant took a 10-8 lead.

The Chargers took the lead for good when, on a second and 20, Austin Carswell hooked up with Clay Cullins for a 21-yard gain. Four plays later sophomore Cameron Lehtola kicked a 37-yard field goal — his first varsity kick — to put Strawberry Crest up 11-10 with 9:05 remaining.

“I was nervous, a little shaky but once I got on the field I blocked everything out,” said Lehtola.

The Chargers defense stood tough as the Cougars (1-5, 0-2) had multiple chance to score with three minutes left in the game.

But Strawberry Crest forced and recovered a fumble and intercepted VanDeGrift. Alex Carswell sealed the win with a sack with six seconds left in the game.

“We had to dig deep in our hearts and we came through,” Carswell said.

Coach John Kelly added that it was the biggest win in Strawberry Crest history.
