DOVER — In a game delayed nearly 90 minutes by lightning, Strawberry Crest took advantage of a 20-point second quarter en route to a  victory over Spoto.

Despite the delay, Spoto coach Dale Caparaso said the extra time sitting around had no impact on his team’s performance, nor did he think it bothered Strawberry Crest (1-1). Instead, he said losing the battle of field position contributed to his team’s defeat.

“When you give up the ball on the 1-yard line, when you give up the ball on the 3-yard line, and when you give up the ball on the 8-yard line,” he said, “it’s tough to win games like that. Other than that, they only had one drive that started on their side of the 50 and ended in a score.”

Spoto (0-2) struggled mightily on offense all night, tallying only one first down with its only completed pass a 70-yard touchdown.

“When we looked bad tonight it’s because they made us look bad,” Caparaso said. “It’s not because we woke up on the wrong side of the bed.”
