TAMPA — Tampa Bay Tech showed little signs of rust coming off of a bye week Friday, handing Class 7A, District 7 foe Wiregrass Ranch its second straight loss 32-0.
“Always happy about a district win,” TBT coach Jayson Roberts said. “(Wiregrass) is definitely an improved program from years past.”
The Titans (2-1, 1-0) were hit hard by penalties to open the first quarter as a 60-yard touchdown pass was waived off thanks to an illegal shift. But TBT would soon find its rhythm as junior quarterback Deon Cain found USF commit Tajee Fullwood for a 53-yard strike as time expired in the opening period. Patrick Redding added a 5-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter to give the Titans a 12-0 lead at halftime.
TBT’s defense was also red-hot, holding the Bulls (2-2, 0-1) to just 1 yard.
The Titans didn’t slow down in the second half, using momentum from a missed field goal and an interception in the third quarter to score three more touchdowns, including two passes, as Cain found Jason Williams and Elijah Spann from 15 and 20 yards.
“We did what we expected to do coming out,” Roberts said. “But looking forward to next week, we’re going to have to improve a lot to be able to compete with Plant. We have our work cut out for us.”
Williams was taken off the field in the fourth quarter on a stretcher and transported to a local hospital after sustaining an apparent neck injury during a play. Roberts said the senior had movement in all of his extremities.
