Carrollwood Day was riding high after a dominant spring game against Bishop McLaughlin and a 23-8 win over Imagine School of North Port a week ago. But the Patriots were run over 47-0 by the defending Class 2A champ, University Christian, on Friday afternoon. A running clock in the second half and lightning strike with just more than two minutes left led to an early end to the game.

“We learned a lesson today,” Patriots coach Lane McLaughlin said.

The Christians marched 90 yards down the field with 11 runs and four first downs, including two third-down conversions to make it 7-0 and drain half of the first quarter. Patriot freshman Nazir Achecar picked off the first pass from University’s Nic Duch but the Patriots could not capitalize.

University Christian produced touchdown drives of 50, 75, 40, 66 and 30 yards the rest of the way, had a pick-six and attempted just three passes. Six University running backs scored touchdowns. One of the few bright spots for the Patriots was junior athlete Michael Smith.

Smith had four solo tackles on defense and converted a key third down for the Pats with a completion to senior Dominic Cuono.
