Weeki Wachee looked as if it was strolling to a Homecoming night victory as the team welcomed Class 8A Orlando Colonial to town. Then everything changed in the second half.

The home team needed every minute to dispatch the Grenadiers 31-28 on Friday night at the Hornets’ Nest.

Marcus Allen put on a show in front of the home crowd, showing off his athleticism. After leaving the game early with a shoulder injury suffered on a late hit, Allen returned only two plays later looking for revenge. He found it with a 12-yard touchdown run to put the Hornets (3-4) on the board first.

Weeki Wachee’s defense stepped up to force five turnovers (three fumbles, two interceptions) as the Hornets went up 28-6 at the half.

Led by quarterback Tony Pitt, the Grenadiers (2-5) came roaring back. Pitt scored three times on the ground, including a 55-yard touchdown run.

It was not enough as a David Tinch 41-yard field goal made the score 31-22 in favor of Weeki Wachee. A late score made it close, but Allen put the game away with a 40-yard first down run in the waning moments.
