Ridgewood has hired former major league second baseman Julius Matos to replace legendary head baseball coach Larry Beets, Ridgewood principal Andy Frelick said Wednesday.

Matos is a 36-year-old New York native. His 13-year pro baseball career included 76 games for the Padres in 2002 and 28 games for the Royals the next year.

He has coached in the minor leagues for several seasons and spent time as a hitting coach for the Tampa Yankees.

Beets was the only baseball coach in Rams history but left the team in the spring because of the Deferred Retirement Option Program. Beets coached Ridgewood for 28 years and helped it advance to the state title game in 2002.
