Former River Ridge tennis star Nicola Wellman was honored by the Big South Conference earlier this month as its freshman of the week.

The Liberty player and Spring Hill native had three singles wins and a doubles victory to help her team finish 4-1 last week.

Wellman qualified for the state tournament twice for the Royal Knights and compiled a 52-3 record in three years. The all-North Suncoast talent also had a 34-2 record in high school doubles before focusing on junior tournaments during her senior season.
