Freedom High golfers Jimmy Jones and Terese Romeo both earned top-five finishes -- the best local efforts -- at last week's Golf Pride/David Leadbetter Junior Classic just outside Orlando.
The 54-hole event, sanctioned by the American Junior Golf Association, was staged on the International Course of ChampionsGate Golf Club, which has a 75.4 rating (74.5 for girls). More than 75 golfers competed.
Jones, a senior who won the Class 2A, District 10 title two autumns ago, shot an even-par 72 the final two rounds of the 54-hole event to place fifth with a 2-under 214 total. On the final day, he followed his 37 on the front nine with two birdies on the back for a 2-under 35.
Romeo, who overcame two offseason wrist surgeries to win 2A district and region titles last fall, shot a 1-under 71 on the last day to finish tied for fourth (3-over 219). Her final round included four birdies on the front nine.
No other bay area golfer placed in the top 10. Palm Harbor University graduate Lauren Coe, the Times' Pinellas County female golfer of the year for 2012, tied for 11th (230).
