One of Jimbo Fisher's first trips as Florida State's de facto head coach was to Leto senior Jeremy Deering this morning.

Falcons offensive coordinator Frank Rose said Fisher visiting Deering at the school Wednesday morning for about an hour. Deering now plans to make an official visit for Florida State in mid-January.

"They're definitely in the mix now," Rose said. "He was good. He talked well of all the other schools recruiting Jeremy, but he said it's better to be needed than it is to be wanted."

And the Seminoles apparently want Deering now. Florida State offered Deering during the summer, but Rose received an impromptu call Tuesday night saying Fisher wanted to visit Deering.

It comes less than 24 hours after longtime Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden's retirement announcement and Fisher's ascension to head coach following FSU's bowl game.

Deering, who is being recruited as an athlete, is the 15th-best athlete recruit by ESPNU and is a three-star recruit by Rivals.com. He owns more than 40 offers, including ones from Purdue, Rutgers, South Carolina, North Carolina, UCF, USF, Kansas, Mississippi and Auburn.
