At Jack Russell Stadium
St. Petersburg 14, Clearwater 4
Seminole 4, Indian Rocks 1
Arlington Country Day 7, Largo 1
Pitcher of the day
Matt Mainelli isn’t St. Petersburg’s ace, but he pitched well enough against Clearwater. Mainelli pitched five innings, gave up five hits and four runs, but only two of those were earned due to throwing errors. Mainelli struck out three before giving way to Nick Fleury in the sixth.
Hitters of the day
Jake Ferguson came up four times against the Tornadoes, three of those times with the bases loaded. In the fourth inning with the Green Devils trailing 4-3, Ferguson tripled to rightfield on a two-strike, two-out pitch to score three runs. He walked with the bases loaded in the fifth and singled in the final run in the sixth with the bases loaded. He was 2-for-3 with five RBIs and two walks. …Connor Labrie was 2-for-3 with four RBIs for St. Petersburg.
Defensive gem of the day
Ferguson showed up in the field as well. He made a nice running catch in rightfield to end the sixth inning and prevent a Clearwater run.
“We started off kind of slow so I knew I had to do something. I had two strikes on me and my coach told me to go the other way. I have some power to the other field and the ball just carried. I managed to come up big.” — Ferguson on his fourth-inning triple
