Ball State became the first Division I-A school to pull the trigger on Gibbs defensive tackle Albert McCoy after extending an offer to the senior lineman according to Gladiators' head coach Antonio Knox.

McCoy is 6 feet 5, 265 pounds and has been a disruptive force in the middle of the Gladiators' defensive line. Gibbs is 2-2 this season --  having to forfeit one game for using an ineligible player -- and has allowed only eight points a game.

"His penetration this year has been amazing," Knox marveled.

The first-year head coach also said that a number of schools are close to extending an offer to McCoy. Among those showing interest are Alabama, USF, Maryland, Kansas, Purdue, Iowa State and Howard. Alabama is also recruiting Gibbs defensive back Gary Simon
