Lakeland Victory Christian coach Jeff Schaum, former Blake coach Sean Washington and former Leto coach Hugh Dehnert are among eight finalists to be Gibbs' next football coach.

The Gladiators have been searching for a replacement for Donnie Abraham, who resigned in February after two seasons to become an assistant with the Tampa Bay Storm. There were 65 applicants for the job, and that list was whittled down to eight finalists this week.

The other finalists are James Barbaree, Antonio Knox, Anthony Givins, Kent Nash and Shane Wheeler.

Barbaree, Knox and Givins were all assistant coaches at Gibbs. Nash is the defensive coordinator at Northeast. Wheeler is a former assistant at Boca Ciega who is currently the linebackers coach at Southwestern Assemblies of God University in Texas.

Dehnert is an assistant at Plant. Washington is the linebackers coach at East Bay.

Gladiators athletic director Mark Robertson said the list will be whittled to six by Friday. They will go through a second interview on April 6 and a coach will be named later that week.
