Some notes about Saturday’s girls basketball region final …
Class 6A: Orlando Dr. Phillips (29-1) at St. Petersburg (20-4)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
HOW THEY GOT THERE: Dr. Phillips beat Vero Beach (59-34) and Apopka (47-41); St. Petersburg beat Plant (64-37) and Sarasota (48-45).
PLAYOFFS ALL TIME: Dr. Phillips (11-4); St. Petersburg (2-5).
TITLES: Dr. Phillips 1 (1992).
OUTLOOK: Believe it or not, Dr. Phillips did not win its district. But earlier this week, the Panthers beat Apopka in a District 5 rematch to reach the region finals. There’s no question St. Petersburg will have its hands full. Dr. Phillips, which is in its first region championship since 1992, is young, but very good. Consider this: The Panthers have three freshmen captains, all of whom finished in double figures against Apopka, led by Sydnei McCaskill's 18. Dr. Phillips last made the final four 18 seasons ago. St. Petersburg has never been there. In fact, the Green Devils’ two playoffs wins in 2010 are its first in the postseason -- ever. St. Petersburg guard Kamika Idom led the Green Devils with 19 points in their most recent win, and she has been among the county’s most valuable players this season. Green Devils point guard Kamyia Smith also is coming off a solid game and another top-notch effort will be needed. Defense is the key to St. Petersburg’s success, but it won’t be easy to rattle Dr. Phillips. Having home court advantage won’t hurt; the Green Devils have lost at home just once this season.
