After toppling George Jenkins on Friday to advance to the Class 5A state tournament, the Newsome girls soccer team has moved up two spots to No. 2 in this week's ESPN Rise Powerade Fab 50 national rankings.
The Wolves (24-0) were ranked fourth last week, but their 2-1 region final win over previous No. 3 George Jenkins, combined with top-ranked Melbourne's PK loss to St. Thomas Aquinas in another 5A region final, allowed Newsome to jump and become the state's highest-ranked team.
Newsome beat George Jenkins (22-1-1) after losing to the Eagles in the postseason the past three seasons.
Plano (Texas) West (9-0) is ranked No. 1 by ESPN Rise, but will play four games this week to make up for weather postponements last week.
Newsome faces No, 25-ranked Seminole (22-2-1), which moved up nine spots from No. 34 after a 3-0 region final win over Gaither, in Friday's Class 5A state semifinal at Pepin Stadium at the University of Tampa.
