ST. PETERSBURG — For the second straight season Lakewood Ranch won the Vinoy Classic at the Vinoy Golf Club on Thursday afternoon. The Mustangs shot 284, seven shots better than second-place Newsome.

Sarasota Riverview was third with 296 and Jesuit fourth (298). The top Pinellas team was Shorecrest, which shot 309 to finish sixth. Mitchell was eighth (314).

The top individual was Danny Walker of Lakewood Ranch, who shot 4-under 67. There was a four-way tie at 69. Jesuit’s Matt Ruel parred the first playoff hole to place second.

St. Petersburg Catholic’s Matt Rothrock tied for fourth.

“The greens were very fast,” said Ruel, who just missed a 25-foot birdie on the first playoff hole. “If you left yourself a downhill putt, you were done. I tried to keep everything above the hole. I didn’t have any three-putts today.”

Newsome had four players who shot 75 or better. Tyler Bakich led the Wolves with even-par 71, followed by John Michael Coultas (72), Kyle West (73) and Mark Nauert (75).

“We’ve been pretty consistent all season,” Newsome coach Jim Goureau said. “It was really nothing special today. It’s about the way we’ve been playing.”

Northside Christian’s Anthony Quintessenza, who was second at this tournament last year, shot 1-under 70 to finish tied for sixth with St. Petersburg’s Blake Dyer.
