Gulf senior guard Nicole Adams, who is nearing the 2,000-point milestone for her prep career, has orally committed to Winthrop University, a Division I-A school in Rock Hill, S.C., according to Buccaneers coach Mike Quarto.

Adams chose Winthrop over offers from schools in the Atlantic Sun Conference and the Ohio Valley Conference.

This season, Adams is the leading scorer on the North Suncoast. In leading the Buccaneers to a 16-3 record, Adams is averaging 28 points a game and is shooting 48 percent from beyond the 3-point line. She has 1,961 points for her four-year prep career at Gulf and will likely surpass the 2,000-point milestone either Tuesday at Ridgewood or Friday against Wesley Chapel.

Adams has been named the Sunshine Athletic Conference's player of the year the past two seasons. She has also earned the St. Petersburg Times' North Suncoast player of the year award following her sophomore and junior campaigns.

Winthrop plays in the Big South Conference. Last season, the Eagles finished with a 13-16 record and tied for fifth place in the conference standings.
