Hawks' Covington commits to Toledo

Armwood DT Allen Covington, a first-team Class 6A all-state pick and the Times' defensive player of the year for its entire coverage area, announced today he has committed to Toledo.

Covington visited the school this weekend.

"I choose Toledo because it was a family there," Covington said in a text message to the Times. "The coaches there are on the verge of something great. I loved how the city supported the school and athletics as well as the administration."

A Tampa Bay Tech transfer, Covington enjoyed a breakthrough senior season for the state champion Hawks, amassing 93 tackles, 11 sacks, two caused fumbles, five pass deflections and one interception (returned for a TD). He becomes the eighth member of the Hawks' 2011 team to commit to a college program, and the seventh to commit to a Division I program.

Toledo finished 9-4 last season, defeating Air Force 42-41 in the Military Bowl, three of its losses, including a 27-22 defeat to Ohio State, were by a combined 11 points.
