Hernando Christian has hired Tony Alvarez as its varsity baseball coach, athletic director Mike Drummond announced Friday in an email.

Alvarez spent four years as an assistant at Cambridge Christian, where he helped guide the team to two state runner-up appearances, before becoming a Lions assistant last year.

He earned all-state honors as a player at Tampa Baptist before moving to Zephyrhills, where he was an all-conference infielder in 1999. Alvarez played college ball at Palm Beach Atlantic and Hillsborough Community College.

Alvarez will also host a baseball camp later this month, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on July 24-26. Cost is $40. For more information, contact Alvarez at 352-796-0616 or talvarez@hernandochristian.org.
