Times' Super Seven
Records through Wednesday
1. Jesuit (10-0): In a pitching duel between Jacksonville Bolles’ Hayden Hurst, a Florida State signee, and Lance McCullers, a Florida commit, it was McCullers who went six innings and racked up 13 strikeouts and Jesuit that earned the 6-1 win
2. Bloomingdale (12-1): When your leadoff hitter (Nolan Schrenker) and third batter (Richie Martin) are hitting over .450 and you have a shutdown closer (Austin Wilson) with a nasty curveball, you get a near-perfect record
3. Plant (10-3): The loss to Newsome in the Saladino quarterfinals aside, a team batting average over .300 and team ERA below 2.30 still make the Panthers among the best in the county
4. Wharton (10-3): In the absurdly competitive Class 8A, District 7 (featuring the Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 7 teams in addition to defending state champs Alonso and Saladino giant killer Newsome), the Wildcats are as tough as any team, and ace Shaun Rubin can battle through any lineup
5. Jefferson (10-3): The Dragons’ efficiency through Saladino pool play (one run allowed) gave them the coveted wild card
6. Gaither (9-4): In a winner-take-all match vs. Alonso, Evan Gainey went the distance in just 86 pitches and Matthew Frey went 3-for-3 as the Cowboys shut out the Ravens 4-0
7. Durant (8-3): The bats are warming up — now the Cougars just need to consistently translate baserunners into runs. Their pitching remains top notch, as the staff has given up more than three runs in only two games.
Just a bit outside: Alonso (8-4), Freedom (9-3), Newsome (7-6), Steinbrenner (7-6), Strawberry Crest (8-3), Tampa Catholic (5-4)
