Fab five volleyball
1. Plant (21-1): The Panthers continue to dominate. They haven’t dropped a game since Oct. 3 in the Asics Challenge, going 20-0 in that span of six wins, including three-set victories over Brandon and Durant. Plant faces Sickles Thursday before its official title defense starts Tuesday.
2. Berkeley Prep (20-3): The Bucs have had only one match since Oct. 10, a three-set win over rival Tampa Prep, after a frenetic early schedule. This weekend they host the Battle of the Bays against Pin County powers Northside Christian and East Lake.
3. Brandon (17-5): The Eagles have beaten some solid competition since losing to Plant, defeating Robinson, Holy Names, Sickles and Riverview — and winning the Holy Names Invitational along the way. That’s a good warmup for a Brandon team that will need to play its best from here on out.
4. Gaither (12-3): Winners of seven straight, the Cowboys are the No. 1 seed in next week’s Class 5A-9 district tournament. Still they will have a collision course with Sickles, which is craving a rematch after a four-set loss.
5. Armwood (10-1): The Hawks haven’t faced the schedule of the teams above them, but recent wins over Durant, Riverview and Newsome have established Armwood as eastern Hillsborough County’s second-best team behind Brandon.
