Volleyball: Hillsborough County Super 7

1. Berkeley Prep (7-4): The Bucs finished 11th in their own Berkeley Premier tournament, quite a tumble from their championship a year ago. But Berkeley remains the county’s best team, with all losses coming against tough out-of-area competition.

2. Wharton (12-0): The Wildcats keep on winning. But Wharton will finally get to measure itself against better competition next week with matches against Steinbrenner and Newsome.

3. Tampa Catholic (13-4): It’s little surprise the Crusaders again won their own tournament, knocking off Mitchell in the final. They cruised to the title, winning 10 of 11 matches.

4. Steinbrenner (9-3): The Warriors went 3-0 last week against Alonso, Freedom and Jefferson. If they can keep up that unbeaten streak Monday against Wharton, prepare for a shakeup in the top 7.

5. Newsome (6-2): The Wolves finished off last week with a 3-1 loss to Plant, snapping a five-match win streak. They’ll get a chance to rebound Thursday against slumping Bloomingdale.

6. Riverview (10-5): The Sharks enter the poll after finishing third in the Crusader Clash, winning four of five matches. Riverview is primed to rise even higher with matches next week against Hillsborough, Spoto and Tampa Bay Tech.

7. Freedom (9-4): The Patriots lost 3-0 to Steinbrenner last week and won’t get a chance to redeem themselves against ranked competition until Wharton on Oct. 9.  But the struggles of Bloomingdale, Sickles and Holy Names keeps them in the top 7 …for now.
