State boys soccer
A, Tampa Prep 5, St. Joseph 0:
At St. Augustine, Tampa Prep (18-6-2) practically locked up its fifth state finals berth in eight seasons shortly after getting off the bus.

Bigger, faster, stronger and more athletic than the hosts, the Terrapins scored four times in the first 15 minutes to set up a showdown with Fort Myers Evangelical in next week’s state final at USF.

“The guys played great and it was a pleasure to watch,” Terps coach Doug Smith said. “They were fired up and they seemed hungry.”

Sophomore Michael Spezza got things rolling, getting the ball at the top of the box and beating his defender for a shot in the net’s far back corner. Spezza and classmate Oscar Skjaerpe had two goals each; junior Macsen Pritchard added the other.

4A, Fleming Island 2, Gaither O: At Orange Park, the Cowboys (20-5-1) had no answer for Fleming Island’s size and physicality up front, falling in the semis for the second season in a row on a rainy north Florida night.

District boys basketball
Wharton 68, Plant 48:
At Durant, Wharton 6-foot-4 junior Troy Holston scored 16 points to pace a balanced scoring attack and lead the Wildcats (24-3) to the 8A-7 title, snapping the Panthers’ 13-game win streak. Point guard C.J. McGill added 14 and forward Chase Litton scored 11 for the Wildcats, who have won three consecutive district titles.

Berkeley Prep 59, Sarasota Booker 28: In Class 4A-9, the host Bucs got 24 points from 6-foot-4 sophomore Justin Gray. Berkeley, which clinched a playoff berth without playing a game in the three-team tournament, broke out to a 16-3 lead after eight minutes and never looked back.

Robinson 87, Lennard 61: In the Class 5A-11 semifinals at Blake, Robinson senior forward Tre Leonard scored a game-high 29. Sophomore Cody Brown added 22 for the Knights (22-4), who scored 34 fourth-quarter points to pull away. Robinson faces top-seeded Jesuit tonight at 7.

Tampa Prep 89, Brooks-DeBartolo 23: In the 3A-8 semifinals at Tampa Prep, the top-seeded Terrapins put four scorers in double figures. Butler University-bound guard Devontae Morgan’s 18 led Tampa Prep.

Seffner Christian 76, Carrollwood Day 58: In the other 3A-8 semifinal, Conner Klorer’s 16 points led the Crusaders, who also got 15 each from Kent Hegarty and Garrett Saunders.

Cambridge 64, Tampa Bay Christian 35: In the 2A-8 semis, four Lancers scored at least eight points, led by Brandon Park’s 11. The Lancers face host Academy at the Lakes, a 58-46 winner over Bayshore Christian, tonight.

“Really, it was one of the few games of the year where everyone played well. We had some guys stand out as far as the goals, but really it was a great team effort.” Tampa Prep boys soccer coach Doug Smith, on his team’s state semifinal win at St. Augustine St. Joseph
