Volleyball Top 5
1. Plant (10-0): The Panthers won’t get challenged until they travel to Chicago for the Nike Challenge early next month. In the meantime, they’re working on getting their defense up to par.
2. Berkeley Prep (8-2): The Bucs follow up a fourth-place showing at the Archbishop Mitty tourney with a convincing three-game win over rival Tampa Prep. They might be the most talented team in the area.
3. Brandon (5-1): Tuesday’s four-game victory over previously undefeated Newsome is the Eagles’ best win of the year. Now, they have to stay consistent as rematch with Plant looms next month.
4. Sickles (6-0): The Gryphons are on a roll. They haven’t dropped a game in their last four matches and are the favorite in this weekend’s HCC Invitational.
5. Tampa Prep (2-2): The Terps’ ho-hum performance in a three-game loss to Berkeley has us close to bumping them out of the top five. This weekend’s Berkeley Premier offers Tampa Prep a shot at redemption.
On the rise: Steinbrenner (10-3), Newsome (5-1), Riverview (5-2), Freedom (4-2).
