The Academy of the Holy Names will be holding a fall sports cancer fundraiser next week with a former coach and teacher in their minds and hearts.

This year’s Spike & Splash for the Cause, which will include a simultaneous Jaguars home volleyball match and swim meet, will take place at Oct. 6. The Holy Names swim team will face Berkeley Prep starting at 6 p.m., while volleyball team will face SPC at 6:30 p.m.

All proceeds from the event will go to Moffitt Cancer Center. Fundraising items will include entry fees ($5), donations as well as merchandise and food sales.

The event honors former Holy Names physical education teacher and swim coach Mara Toole Schultz, who lost a long battle with cancer in May at the age of 33.

Schultz, a former state champion swimmer at Plant, coached the Holy Names swim team from 2001 to ’07 (To read more about Schultz, click HERE)

The Holy Names volleyball team began the event in 2007 as a breast cancer fundraiser, and the Jaguars swim team joined a year later when Schultz was diagnosed with breast cancer.
