We dig into the last half of our countdown of the best football players in the bay area. Catch up on missed installments here:
2011 stats:43 tackles, five passes defended, one INT
The breakdown:The Freedom senior (6-0, 190 pounds) had a nice summer going against some of the best competition around, becoming a hot commodity for recruiters. The DB will anchor an underrated but promising defense in 2012.
2011 stats:40 tackles, three sacks, one INT
The breakdown:A top defender last season, the 6-1, 210-pound Tampa Catholic junior will be a force once again. And he’ll also take on some of the ball carrying duties this year. It’s an easy call for us predicting the talented and athletic Harrell to be a breakout star in 2012.
2011 stats:134-for-236, 2,056 yards, 10 TDs, nine INTs
The breakdown:Wharton's addition of big WRs D’Andre Washington and Auden Tate, plus Vernon Hargreaves in the slot, gives the strong-armed and accurate junior QB a lot of talent to throw to. Litton (6-6, 195) threw for 200-plus yards in four of the last five games in 2011.
2011 stats:81 tackles, 5.5 sacks
The breakdown:The 6-2, 220-pound Hernando senior already has an SEC offer from Missouri. He’s a tenacious linebacker, but has the strength to play at defensive end as well. He will challenge for Defensive Player of the Year honors on the North Suncoast.
2011 stats:42-for-86, 633 yards, 11 TDs, five INTs
The breakdown:the Gaither QB (6-1, 170) throws one of the sweetest balls around, and the big-armed junior should produce much bigger numbers in 2012 in what should be an improved offense at Gaither.
2011 stats:14 pancake blocks, 19 tackles, one sack, one INT
The breakdown:The big boy of Jesuit’s offensive line is already committed to USF, and committed to another dominant season in 2012. The senior (6-4, 295) is also a dandy run stopper and pass rusher on the other side of the ball.
2011 stats:23 tackles, six passes defended, three INTs
The breakdown:Johnson, a wide receiver in youth football, now ranks as one of the most promising defensive backs in Tampa Bay. The junior has already picked up offers from Iowa State and USF, and that is just the beginning for the 5-foot-11, 177-pounder.
2011 stats:13 catches, 260 yards, 5 TDs
The breakdown:If anyone earned their way into the HomeTeam 100 with a huge offseason, it’s this Tampa Catholic WR. The 6-4, 190-pound senior has earned MVP honors at every stop, and the last time we remember him dropping a ball was …umm …uhhhh…
2011 stats:19-for-27, 212 yards, three TDs, one INT
The breakdown:Yes, Banks was a backup last season and is unproven. But he’s a Plant quarterback, and the 6-1, 186-pound senior will be one of the best by season’s end. Banks may be further along than James Few was last year, and look how that turned out.
The breakdown:Oklahoma has already offered the 6-2, 180-pound athlete, who only needs a position to shine. The Gibbs junior can play pretty much anywhere, but Hall fits the definition of “just a football player” maybe better than anyone in Tampa Bay.
