Get to know Jefferson RB Shaquille Speights, who comes in at No. 58 in our HomeTeam 100 (check out Nos. 51-60 here).
2011 stats: 130 carries, 845 yards, eight TDs
The breakdown: Like most of the Jefferson team in the early going last season, Shaquille Speights struggled in the transition from backing up a state champion running back to being a starring one.
But like all the Dragons, Speights found his groove after a bumpy start.
After running for 208 yards and one touchdown through four games, Speights showed he was a capable replacement for Demetrious
Russell, running for 637 and seven touchdowns during the Dragons' five-game winning streak to end the season.
"It was tough, we had a young team last year,'' said Speights, a 5-10, 208-pound senior. "But now we're all used to the program. I feel a lot more comfortable.''
Speights scored a touchdown in seven of the nine games he played in, including three on pass receptions. He sees himself as a 25-carries-a-game kind of back (he only carried it as many as 20 time in one game last season) though he'll split carries with transfer Trevor Register, a speedy alternative to Speights' bulldog style.
That hasn't stopped him from setting some lofty goals.
"My last year, I want to end up with 2,000 yards,'' Speights said. "I think I can do that.''
