Each week, our HomeTeam staffers will nominate one male and one female Hot Shot athlete from each of the counties we cover, then we turn the voting over to our readers. These nominations span Saturday, Sept. 29 through Friday, Oct. 5. The winners get a free T-shirt and bragging rights over every other school in the area. Read up on what made our nominees stand out, then vote until noon.
Claire Becker, Steinbrenner golf: The sophomore shot 4-under 32 in Tuesday’s win vs. Plant on front nine at Heritage Harbor, which tied Alex Milan’s school record (Milan now plays at FSU). She also had five birdies, three pars, one bogey.
Lauren Gonzalez, Ridgewood volleyball: The senior setter totaled 35 assists, 12 kills, 11 digs and four aces in the Rams’ big district wins over Anclote and Fivay.
Amanda Spring, Northeast cross country: The top public school runner in Pinellas County won her fourth big meet, battling through heavy rain to finish first at the Viking Invitational in 19 minutes, 54 seconds. The senior also won the large-school race at the flrunners.com Invitational last weekend.
Dan Barber, Mitchell football: The senior running back rushed for 250 yards and all four of his team’s touchdowns in a 27-17 win over Land O’Lakes. All of his scores covered at least 33 yards.
Chris Greene, East Bay football: The junior running back had 169 yards and two touchdowns (of 54 and 35 yards) on only nine carries in the Indians’ 33-14 win vs. Riverview.
Jack Maguire, St. Petersburg golf: The senior shot even-par 71 to win the Mustang Invitational last week at Seminole Lake Country Club. Maguire, an FSU commit, was the only player in the 105-person field to shoot even par. Maguire also shot 1-under 35 Tuesday in a match against East Lake and Clearwater to tie for medalist honors.
Voting is now closed.
