A spotlight on the Times’ bay area players of the week.

Female Hot Shot: Brielle Downing, Bishop McLaughlin
Sport:
Basketball
Skinny: The sophomore scored a game-high 20 points in the Hurricane’s 37-21 win over Carrollwood Day last week. She also had seven steals, five rebounds, two assists and a block in that game. She’s averaged 15.2 points per game this year and reached the 500-point milestone in Bishop McLaughlin’s second game of the season. As a freshman, Downing set school records in points in a season (478), 3-pointers made (55), free throws made (87) and free-throw percentage (74 percent).

Male Hot Shot: Brady Grimm, Shorecrest
Sport:
Basketball
Skinny: After transferring from East Lake in the offseason, the shooting guard watched a few videos of the Chargers’ fast-paced offense and knew he would be able to improve on last year’s 15 points per game average. He is averaging 26 and has helped Shorecrest to a 7-1 start, including a win over Class 5A defending state champ Jesuit. Last week, Grimm scored a team-high 28 points to lead the Chargers to a 73-49 victory over then-unbeaten Calvary Christian. “I kind of knew because of the style we play here, I’d be able to get off to great start. Now, I just want to keep it going,” he said.
