HomeTeam Hot Shots
A spotlight on the Times’ bay area players of the week.

Female Hot Shot: Meagan Thomas, Dixie Hollins
Sport:
Basketball
Skinny: The senior had a big week. First, she scored 37 points against Largo in a district semifinal to help the Rebels earn their first region tournament appearance. Then in Friday’s district final, she scored 39 — and hit five 3-pointers — in a win over Mitchell to secure the school’s first district championship in any girls sport. Thomas, who averages 25.9 points per game, and the Rebels will try to remain hot Thursday in a region quarterfinal against Hillsborough.

Male Hot Shot: Tim Sakow, PHU
Sport:
Wrestling
Skinny: The senior, still feeling the effects from mono, couldn't finish his match against Countryside’s Cain Martin at the Pinellas County Athletic Conference tournament. He exacted revenge in the rematch with a 12-2 victory over Martin at the Class 3A, District 7 tournament. The Hurricanes dominated in the lower weights to win their sixth straight title. “Tim had a great tournament, and came out real strong,” coach Brad Sakevich said. “That got everyone pumped and helped get us on a roll the rest of the day.”
