A spotlight on the Times’ bay area players of the week.
Female Hot Shot: Malika Saffore, Sunlake
Skinny: Sunlake’s 8-3 record is the best in school history, attributed in part to the addition of center Malika Saffore. Not that she would take that credit herself. The senior, who has offers from Coppin State and Ave Maria University, credited Sunlake’s breakout season to a new coaching staff and the drive of her teammates. “This wasn’t just an individual effort, it was a team effort,” Saffore said. “I just want to thank God for it.” Athletic director Reesa Pledge said Saffore’s leadership has created a solid foundation.
Male Hot Shot: Kyle Ploucher, Tampa Catholic
Skinny: Ploucher had his hand in all four of Tampa Catholic’s offensive touchdowns in the Crusaders’ 43-0 road win against Cardinal Mooney on Friday, bringing the senior’s touchdown total to 11 in five games. Ploucher threw 14-, 24- and 11-yard touchdowns against the Cougars, and had a 1-yard touchdown run to kick off Tampa Catholic’s second-half scoring. Ploucher is on track to eclipse his totals for yards (1,328) and touchdowns (16) tallied last year in the Crusaders’ 12-game season, one that took them to the Class 3A region finals.
