Wed. October 2, 2013 | John C. Cotey | Email

(This week's entry form is at the bottom)

John C. Cotey is not only regarded as one of the finest prep columnists in the country, if not the best, but also as one of the brightest, wittiest minds in the game of prep sports today.

Throw in the classic good looks, and you have arguably one of the most perfect people that Tampa Bay has seen.

But something was always missing from Cotey's total package -- a win in the HomeTeam Pick 'em.

Until now.

After years of slaving over the entries and the results, Cotey finally broke through last week to finish atop a crowded field of 50. But why am I still writing in third person? I don't know. I will stop now.

Anyway, yeah, I WON!

In a week that was supposed to be difficult, a week where I picked two of the top three games incorrectly (thanks, Jefferson and Plant), I went 16-4. That tied with me three others: Peezy, Shock and DC11, but my tiebreaker pick of 301 (combined passing yards of Deoindre Porter and Colby Brown) was far and away the cloest, smartest most insightful choice of the week. I just figured 150 for each, and I threw in one yard for kicks. The actual total, as reported by the Times Friday night, was 197. It should be noted, however, that while we had Porter for 99 yards, Jefferson had him for 197 on MaxPreps. Which makes me still closer.

Rough week, though, eh people? Last week's winner, Alejandro Tamayo, was 13-7. Past winner Mark Hampton was 12-8, same as usual contender A.P. DiNovo. Last year's Cinderella, Mary Krause, was 12-8 and can't seem to get going. Matt Baker, who is supposed to be a professional for God's sake, was 11-9, just one better than his dog Reggie.

How'd you do?

We have a new overall leader as Tamayo tumbled from the top of the overall leaderboard after his disasterous week as things tightened considerably. Tom Ketchum takes over the top spot with a 79-21 record, followed by SHOCK and Tamayo at 78-22, and Peezy and myself are closing at 77-23.

New week. Take your shot at it:
