LAND O’LAKES — Not much had gone wrong this season for the Mitchell boys team going into Tuesday’s match with Land O’Lakes.
Mitchell was undefeated at 10-0 and oozing confidence with the Sunshine Athletic Conference championships approaching … until Tuesday evening, at least. The Gators had one of their best days on the course with a 147-161 victory at Plantation Palms.

“We just put together an unbelievable round and everybody played well,” Land O’Lakes coach D.J. Holland said. “I knew these guys could play this way and I’m glad they all did it at the same time. I think my guys just really, really played well.”

Land O’Lakes had a phenomenal day on the greens, as Jon Kopsell finished with the day’s best score, even-par 35. The Gators (8-3) got solid scores from Robbie Nieman (1-over 36), Brad Weaver (3-over 38) and Jesse Boger (3-over 38).

“I’ve been saying all year that Brad and Jesse are the key players for us,” Nieman said.

Mitchell’s Dylan Strout finished 11-over 46 in what overall was a poor outing for the Mustangs (10-1). Dominik Dithmer was Mitchell’s lone bright spot, finishing at 4-over 39.

“I just think we weren’t ready to play,” Mitchell coach Rick Hyatt said. “I don’t like to lose, but I’d rather us lose now than in the conference tournament. I’m hoping this is a wake-up call for us.”
