Indian Rocks Christian placed second out of 16 teams at the OVA Showcase volleyball tournament in Orlando over the weekend.

The Golden Eagles rolled through three pool games without dropping a set to advance to the Elite Division semifinals, where they defeated Class 6A Spruce Creek, a region semifinalist last season, 25-23, 26-28, 15-10.

In the Elite Division final, IRC fell to John Carroll 25-21, 22-25, 15-7. Five straight errors to open the final game kept the Golden Eagles from winning the championship.

“That was tough to recover from,” IRC coach Mark Foster said. “John Carroll played well offensively and defensively. We matched up pretty well with them, but they were able to frustrate us.”

In pool play, IRC swept Lake Region, Gulf Coast and Orangewood Christian.

“I was hoping we’d be able to go over and win the whole thing,” Foster said. “But it was a good tournament for us.”

Senior outside hitter Marisa Moralobo led IRC offensively and defensively with 37 kills and 65 digs for the weekend. Michelle Brown, the Golden Eagles libero, added 55 digs.
