Steinbrenner senior Alexis Wright, the reigning Times female track athlete of the year for Hillsborough County, confirmed Tuesday she'll attend the University of Miami after winning an elite scholarship from the school.
Wright, who won three events and set two school records at Tuesday's Vernon F. Korhn Hillsborough County Championships at Jefferson, said she was among 50 recipients of the Ronald A. Hammond Scholarship. Named in honor of UM's first director of minority affairs, the scholarship pays full tuition.
Wright, who interviewed two weekends ago, said roughly 500 applied.
An aspiring anesthesiologist with an astronomical weighted GPA, Wright won three medals at last season's Class 2A state meet, including a gold in the 100-meter hurdles. She's expected to compete in track at Miami.
