Former Newsome girls basketball coach Barry Jacobs has been hired as the school's boys coach, athletic director Paul Lindstrom announced today.
Jacobs, currently a Wolves football assistant and the school's girls flag football coach, replaces Jon Mackey, who began the program in 2003. Mackey resigned last month to follow the college playing career of his son Trent, a freshman at Louisiana-Monroe.
According to a resume released by Lindstrom, Jacobs coached the Wolves girls one season (2008-09), leading them to the program's only winning record. From 1993-97 he was boys head coach at Riverhills Christian in east Tampa. He later served as a boys (2001-03) and girls (2004-07) assistant at Riverview.
Currently a running backs coach at Newsome, Jacobs, a USF graduate, previously served as offensive coordinator at Leto, Spoto and Riverview. He teaches physical education at Newsome.
