Melissa Ganther, who starred four seasons at the University of Virginia as the former Melissa Mahony, has been hired as basketball coach at Academy of the Holy Names, the school announced in a release.
Ganther, a mother of five who also assisted at Virginia in the mid-1980s, replaces Chris Kumka, who stepped down after compiling a 31-19 mark in two seasons.
Ganther, most recently middle school girls coach at Christ the King Catholic School, played at Virginia from 1978-82 and later played one season in Germany. She still ranks among the Cavaliers' top 20 alltime scorers with 1,400 career points.
