Jesuit’s Cole Gibbs, a junior outfielder, orally committed to North Carolina on Wednesday night, Tigers’ baseball coach Richie Warren said Thursday.
Gibbs will likely bat in the middle of the lineup this season, Warren said. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Tiger also had offers from other Division I programs, including Florida, Alabama and Florida State.
UNC is the nation’s winningest program since 2006, and the Tar Heels have been to the College World Series six of the past eight years.
Last year Gibbs played behind outfielder Leland Saile, who is now playing baseball at Navy. Gibbs finished the season with a .462 batting average, recording six hits in 13 at-bats.
Gibbs is one of eight Tigers who have orally committed to D-I baseball programs. Teammates Evan Cannan (High Point) and Bobby Hearn (Wake Forest) are also committed to North Carolina schools.
