It has been a good week for Jesuit pitcher Lance McCullers. Let's review:
*Last Wednesday, he won Gatorade High School Baseball Player of the Year for the state of Florida and was the first player from Jesuit to do so in the honor's 27-year history.
Wednesday afternoon, McCullers collected one more honor, as the Florida Dairy Farmers named him the 2012 winner of Florida Mr. Baseball.
As Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow said to local media Tuesday, "His numbers in high school competition in Florida, which is pretty good competition, speak for themselves." McCullers allowed just two earned runs in 77.1 innings for an ERA of 0.18. He also posted a 13-0 record with 140 strikeouts against 30 walks for Jesuit (28-2), which was ranked No. 1 in the country by ESPNHS, Baseball America and Perfect Game heading into the Class 5A state semifinals against eventual state champion Plantation American Heritage.
McCullers has until 5 p.m. on July 13 to sign with the Astros. If the two sides can't agree to terms, he will attend the University of Florida.
