Wiregrass Ranch right-handed pitcher John Michael Gant has signed with the New York Mets according to Bulls' head coach Jeff Swymer.
On Tuesday, Gant was selected by the Mets in the 21st round of the 2011 Major League Baseball first-year player draft with pick No. 642. Gant was one of two high school players from the North Suncoast taken in this year's draft -- Hernando's Brett Maggard, who went to the Philadelphia Phillies with the final pick of round 38, was the other.
Gant compiled a 6-0 record and 1.90 ERA in 13 appearances for Wiregrass Ranch in 2011. Gant tossed two no-hitters, struck out a North Suncoast-best 107 batters and was named the St. Petersburg Times' All-North Suncoast Pitcher of the Year. He also batted .305 with 21 runs scored, 14 RBIs, three triples and three home runs.
Gant initially committed to Long Island University at the start of his senior year and signed with the Blackbirds in March of 2011. After signing with the Mets late Friday night, Gant foregoes college baseball in favor of the professional route.
