Hudson baseball coach Keith Newton has been named the Cobras’ new athletic director, principal David LaRoche said Thursday.
“I think it’s time for him to take this kind of role at Hudson,” LaRoche said.
Newton’s had just about every other one in his 38-year coaching career. The 61-year-old served as Hudson’s head football coach from 1979-1983 and was Gulf’s head coach for nine years. He coached the offensive line and linebackers as a Hudson assistant last fall.
Newton has spent the last six years as the Cobras’ head baseball coach but has resigned from that position to focus on his administrative duties.
“I’m sure down the road I’m going to miss it,” Newton said of coaching.
Newton has also coached boys golf, girls golf, boys weightlifting, girls weightlifting, track and weightlifting.
“Time passed and different options came open,” Newton said. “There were different things the school needed help with and needed coaches, so I took those situations and worked them.”
Newton started his new position this week and will continue to teach weightlifting as a physical education teacher.
He replaces Andy Schmitz, who resigned as athletic director last month to focus on his football coaching career.
