Robinson coach Mike DePue thought he had seen everything in three decades of coaching until Saturday, when Florida International University rendered him blissfully blindsided.
With a page right out of The Blind Side.
Presumably on hand to observe the Knights' half-dozen or so Division I prospects, FIU offensive line coach Alex Mirabal also noticed unheralded left tackle Richie Reay, whose prior playing experience is limited to a little junior varsity action.
After 15 minutes of observation, Mirabal offered the senior-to-be a scholarship, DePue said.
"It was really a special, special moment," DePue said. "In all the years I've coached football, it was definitely one of the most emotional moments of my life. The surprise on his face...It was fun."
Reay (6-foot-5, 250 pounds), who moved from Robinson then returned, is the sixth Knight to receive an offer this spring.
"I have a great respect for FIU and Coach (Mirabal) saying this is a kid who can play football," DePue said. "Not that they're taking a risk, they're making a statement they're looking for kids who can play."
