More than two months after national signing day, Robinson QB Zain Gilmore finally has found a college home.
Gilmore, a Blake transfer who directed the Knights (11-2) to the Class 5A state semifinals in his only year at the Port Tampa school, has committed to Division I-AA Eastern Kentucky, first-year Knights coach Shawn Taylor announced.
Recruited as an athlete by EKU, Gilmore amassed more than 2,300 total yards as a senior, including 730 in the playoffs alone. An A-B student at Robinson, he seemed destined for a Division I program at one point, but didn't earn a qualifying SAT score until a week after national signing day.
His only other options: Peru State and Fort Hays State, both in the Midwest. Taylor said Gilmore was set to sign with Fort Hays before EKU came through with its 11th-hour offer.
"He was kind of behind the eight ball," Taylor said. "The I-A and I-AA (programs), they're already filled up. He just got lucky. A scholarship opened up at a good football school."
